Edit: It seems the Gundam has been completed! More information on punynari’s blog
As some of you might have already known, Japan is building a life-sized Gundam in commemoration of the series’ 30th anniversary. It is currently under construction at Odaiba’s Shiokaze Park in Tokyo. Construction of the Gundam seems to be moving well, with the lower part of the body almost at completion.
On the 19th, the executive commitee of the Green Tokyo Gundam Project opened the area to the media to have a look at how things are progressing.

The statue will be a faithful reproduction of the RX-78-2 Gundam, also known as the first Gundam. Currently, the steel frame of the lower half is in the stages of being fitted with armour that is reinforced with FRP (Fibreglass reinforced plastic). In addition, polyurethane coating, which is normally used on skyscrapers will be applied onto the FRP and on top of that, a clear coating of flouride resin will be sprayed on. Whoa, these things are built like tanks! I wonder when Japan is going to start mass producing these babies.

On various parts of the Gundam, are warning notices and instructions, giving it an authentic feel.

From now, they will start equipping the ankles and arms will armour. The torso, left and right arms and other completed parts will be fitted into the Gundam in sequence. From July 11 onwards, the Gundam will be open to the public. Apart from the eyes, shoulders and 50 other parts that light up, the ankle, louver of the chest and some other parts of the body will spray out mist. Also, the head will be able to move in all directions.

This is a depiction of the completed version and will be 18 meters in height (currently 11 meters).
